Found along the coastline attached to rocks, blue mussels are bivalve mollusks with a blue-black exterior and iridescent interior. They live in dense communities, attaching themselves to surfaces with strong, thread-like structures called byssal threads. Mussels play a key role in marine ecosystems as natural water filters, ecosystem engineers and a food source for wildlife.
